Rain or Shine, Soaring Eagles Workshop

By Roy Cook

February 9, 2010, SCAIR Soaring Eagle workshop was drizzly and cool. There is an outstanding response by students, mentors and parents, in spite of the weather. People came to laugh, talk, and dance and have a great time this evening. This is the best inter-tribal gathering to attend with our American Indian community for a sober, clean, positive, educational and cultural experience. Rain or shine we hope to see you, your family and a friend at the Soaring Eagles next week!

SCAIR Senior advisor Randy Edmonds had another commitment this evening. We look forward to next week to continue the Kiowa Gourd Dance instruction. SCAIR American Indian dance instructor Chuck Cadotte offered the blessing for the SCAIR sponsored Potluck meal. Debbie Razo and her crew served up some well-appreciated spaghetti along with navy bean soup and corn bread, yummy. Many parents and dedicated Soaring Eagle volunteers added their potluck contributions to the evening’s offerings. There were two birthdays celebrated this evening along with songs, cake and ice cream. It is all tasty and very good.

All will be good if we keep our eye on the prize: KIDS and RESPECT. Honor our traditions and live a great life.

The San Diego Inter-tribal singers traded ‘old favorites’ songs with the other drum. Good current style pow wow songs were sung by Leland Red Eagle and Terry Hinsley with Steve Garcia ‘drum hopping’ this evening.  All these good songs filled the hall and allowed Chuck to focus on personal instruction in the various categories. He called for the ‘Duck and Dive’ and many of the adults traditional and grass dancers joined in the mentoring instruction this evening. Chuck said we would be teaching about respect and pow wow protocol next week.
