Wall to wall at the Soaring Eagle

By Roy Cook

This April 20, 2010 Soaring Eagle Dance workshop was filled with even more new families and regular attendees to enjoy the evening with the Soaring Eagles. SCAIR American Indian dance instructor, Chuck Cadotte opened the evening instruction and called for all the tiny tots for their introduction to the Dance circle.

We had three drums this evening. This gave the dancers opportunities to enjoy specialty numbers: duck and dive, crow hop and the snake and buffalo. All the other regular categories were reviewed too. The two winners from Sherman Indian school pow wow were announced to the entire group.

Efforts continue to emphasize the traditional values of American Indian tribal communities. Chuck said we must listen and have character, respect and keep our word when we give it. It is all very encouraging and empowering to see the personal pride and Tribal identity emerge from these young dancers.

We learned of more recent health issues and deaths in the American Indian community. With this in mind, John Hood once again, this evening, led a prayer in his Dine language for all in need of spiritual encouragement.

We all had a good time singing for a large group of springtime born birthday boys and girls.  There were 2 children receiving the benefits of the Indian birthday song and cakes!

There are many Pow wow doings coming up in our San Diego community these next three months. Our Soaring Eagles are being selected for responsible Head staff positions at these events. We have watched the two year olds and others as they learn and grow up. The girls now have their shawls and the boys use the dance sticks and hoops to gesture their moves. Come to a local event and see for yourself.

Maybe we will see you and your family at the next Soaring Eagle Dance Workshop on Tuesday Evening, 6:30pm, at the Old Town Ballard Parent center. Everyone is welcome!
