Soaring Eagle Shine at SDSU Pow wow

By Roy Cook

This June 1, 2010 Soaring Eagle Dance workshop evening announcements and activities continued with the warm memory of good times at the San Diego State Pow wow. Many of the Soaring Eagle parents and teachers participated at the Pow wow in regalia. The Soaring Eagle kids did shine in a kaleidoscope of color at the SDSU Memorial Day Pow wow!

The Wildcat singers opened the Pow wow with traditional songs from the Kumeyaay-Tipai people. Jon Meza Cuero is the lead Wildcat singer.

Appreciation is expressed, of the SDSU Pow wow by Soaring Eagle parent John Hood. He wrote,
“Thank you for the development, coordination and implementation of the 2010 SDSU Pow Wow. The American Indian community is grateful for the re-establishment of a principle annual cultural event of the past.  Our gratitude also goes to the SDSU Alumni staff for their tasks in communicating with the SDSU foundation.  It is a struggle to obtain resources to implement myriad of activities on SDSU campus.  Your experiences are now an insight for next year’s Pow Wow.  This Memorial Day weekend Pow Wow was a success. The spirit of the American Indian
community values leadership and respects foundations that embraces our diversity; our voices, songs and dances we share with proper perspectives.  The children of the SDSU Indian Education Title VII Soaring Eagles Program welcome your support and motivation.  They welcome you and the SDSU foundation to their Soaring Eagles Pow Wow on June 26-27, 2010 at the Ballard Parent Center in Old Town.”

Everyone is welcome!

American Indian character and protocol activities continued with American Indian SCAIR dance instructor Chuck Cadotte this evening. The mentors also stepped up to the task. Just as most of us are happy to volunteer our time and talent to help the Indian children gain confidence and learn about fun, positive, healthy, drug and alcohol free involvements.

The evening’s instruction in protocol continued outside with Frank Gastelum. These educational activities inform and demonstrate, by example the protocol and respect of the pow wow circle. American Indian traditions are a living experience and made a part of a shared life history with the Soaring Eagle youth community.

We again had two drums this evening; this gave the dancers added opportunities to enjoy dancing to songs for each category. All the other regular dance categories were reviewed too.

Debbie and the Razo crew had a really well received SCAIR sponsored meal of hamburger helper casserole and string bean casserole. Also, the nachos were tasty with cheese. Two or more Potato salads, fruit, lettuce salad and the usual condiments made for a good meal.

Later in the evening, we celebrated three birthdays with songs, outstanding homemade cake and coffee or punch. Again, this evening the dancing was musically topped off with the ever-popular round dance, with words, for all visitors, students and parents to enjoy.
