This July 27, 2010 at the Soaring Eagle Dance workshop Vickie Gambala introduced Art Andrade from La Jolla Band and Reservation. He was the early director of the then San Diego City Schools Title IV Indian Education program.

Vickie Gambala is a proud Grandmother: Oxnard’s Sierra Gambala earned a Silver medal in the 100-meter dash (14.07 seconds) and a Bronze medal in the 400 meters in 1:10.12 in the Sub Midget Division AAU Junior Olympics West Coast Championships at Reno on July 3-4.She was fourth in the 200 meters (28.96).
She will compete in the AAU Junior Olympics National Championships July 31-Aug. 3 in Hampton Roads, Va.
Sierra Gambala is trained by Ezekel Joseph of Phenom Athletics and he also trained her sister Alexandria, a middle distance runner from Fresno State.

Most of this evenings efforts are directed toward the upcoming American Indian cultural events: Barona Pow wow, Sycuan Pow wow and the 41st National NIEA Conference at the T&C on October 7-10, 2010.

We will meet at Pepper Tree Park August 10, 17, 24, 31, 2010 in Balboa Park for the summer.

SCAIR dance instructor Chuck Cadotte offered the blessing for the food. He also directed the evening’s dance instruction on the microphone. More families that are new continue to attend from our local reservations and other urban communities. We continue to provide basic instruction for the new and younger dancers. Once they learn the basic steps they can join in with greater confidence. We again had two songs for each category this evening for the dancers to enjoy the change up and work on their endurance. All the other regular dance categories were announced and reviewed.

Debbie and the Razo crew had a really well received SCAIR sponsored meal and a bountiful potluck of: always favorite fried chicken, rice, rice, rice and steamed rice, salad, fruit, chips-pretzels-chili-popcorn and salad made for a good thankful meal. Later we celebrated Vera Tucker’s birthday with a short sugar break for cupcakes, coffee or punch.

There were three drums this evening and all pushed up good lively intertribal songs for the parents and dance students. These will reinforce the total pow wow experience. American Indian traditions are a living experience and made a part of lifelong memories that are added to the tribal memory of the children in the ways of our ancestors. These children will tell their children how things were when they were young and the continuity of culture will restore the hoop of the world, for all the people. We always need to remember, it is not about us, and it is for the children!

Finally, most of us are honored to be asked to volunteer our time and talent to help the Indian children gain confidence and learn about fun, positive, healthy, drug and alcohol free involvements. Maybe we will see you and your family at the next American Indian event or the Soaring Eagle Dance Workshop on Tuesday Evening, 6:00pm, at the Old Town Ballard Parent center, 2375 Congress Street San Diego, Ca 92110.

REMEMBER last class at Ballard next week. We will meet at Pepper Tree Park August 10, 17, 24, 31, 2010 in Balboa Park for the summer.

Thanks Carla for the shots this week!!
