This annual Imperial Beach Pow wow by the Sea is wonderful. The American Indian Warrior Association Honor Color Guard brought in the colors in the Grand Entry. Opening Gourd dance was led by AIWA President William Buchanan. He was pleased to accept the honor at very short notice.

clip_image006We were grateful for the exceptional support of many Gourd dancers from as far as Bakersfield and Alaska. Additionally we were able to honor and recognize fellow military veterans from the Vietnam War and shake the hand of Korean and WW II veterans in attendance. Also, we were honored to fly Wilbur Solomon’s brothers, Woodrow, Indian staff and have Wilbur’s presence at both days gourd dance.

At the pow wow there were special sponsored dance exhibitions and competitions: Iron Drum, Women’s Iron dance and Men’s Traditional Iron dance and on Sunday, a Hand drum contest. Also, Marc Lopez and William Buchanan separately contributed flute songs for all to enjoy.

Many visitors enjoyed the special opportunities for take home memories. And many took a chance to win one of the prizes donated by the very happy vendors for the raffle. There were many tasty treats to sample and enjoy from the food booths.

There were Exhibition Dances, Gourd dance songs, Honoring songs, Memorial songs and Intertribal songs. Ten drums in attendance: Red Warrior, White Cloud, Prayin Eagle, Luiseno Singers, Blue Star, Maswaday, Shining Peak and a couple late arrivals too.

There were hundreds of songs sung and thousands of feet danced in joy on our Mother Earth these two beautiful days. Now is the time when the day and the night are in balance. Look to the sky and see the full moon. This is the time to dance. You take part whenever you do whatever you do to help heal the earth. All is complete when you choose to show love for all of God’s creation.

Imperial Beach Pow wow princess Cheyenne Garcia family hosted everyone on Saturday in honor of her year of representation. Ophelia Gastelum is the community choice for the 2011-12 IB princess. Congratulations to the family.
